Local Motion! – Island Batik Log Cabin Blog Hop

Who is ready to twirl and dance in a sparkling log cabin at midnight? Well, now you can with this month’s Island Batik Ambassador Challenge! The ambassadors were challenged to make a log cabin quilt with new fabrics coming out to shops. Island Batik takes a survey at the beginning of the year to set us up for success on challenges and fabrics we would be the most excited about. They paired me up with an ideal line by sending me “Local Motion” by Kathy Engle for Mary Mack Made Mine.

This fabric gives a stunning range of blues, purples, greens and golds with motifs of several moving designs like bicycles, fans, and splat marks!

I went through several mockups of various Log Cabin block designs and orientations. There’s many possibilities with this block. With less than a month to make this quilt, but plenty of time to design, I settled large block variation in my new pattern “January Waltz!” This design was created in Electric Quilter 8.

I love how the strip sets allow the motifs to shine, and the accent fabric moves your attention like streamers gliding down at New Years.

It’s amazing how this fabric sparkles even more in real life!

Here is the project list from the wonderful sponsors that make this program possible:

  • Main Print – Local Motion Collection by Island Batik
    • This collection by Kathy Engle for Mary Mack Made Mine has a beautiful color palette. Inspired by all the motion in the print, my designs mirrors the party streamers falling from the ceiling at New Years!
  • Background Fabric – Meringue – Foundation Collection Fabric from Island Batik
    • A warm toned neutral with a fun, leafy dot print.
  • Backing – Ivory – Foundation Collection from Island Batik
    • Solid warm neutral which compliments the Meringue Background, and also gave my quilting thread and easy pairing to shine on the front, and blend in the back.
  • Batting – Hobbs Tuscany Collection Cotton Wool Batting(link)
    • This blend is 80% Cotton, 20% Wool and will resist bunching and fiber migration.
  • Piecing Needle – Schmetz 75/11 needle – Stepp-Nadel Quilting Needle(link)
    • Their especially tapered point makes them ideal for penetrating through layers when quilting as well as crossed seams.
  • Piecing Thread – Aurifil Dove 2600 Mako NE 50 weight thread(link)
    • The color, Dove, is s cool light gray which compliments fabrics with high contrast. I love piecing with 50wt 100% cotton because the cotton has a nice grip on the fabric, while the weight of the thread is thin enough to not add bulk to the seam.
  • Tools – Oliso TG 1600 Pro Plus iron in Yellow – (link)
    • With iTouch technology, thirty minute extended auto shut-off and many more features, the Oliso Auto Lift ProPlus Iron was perfect for the many times I was up and down adding each layer of the log cabin block!
Being matchy-match between my Oliso Iron in Yellow and the Local Motion Fabrics!

And finally the quilt reveal! This pattern is call January Waltz, a beginner friendly project that will utilize piecing with large strip sets, but guide you through the best way to tackle all those matching seams! Here’s where you can purchase a PDF of the pattern! (ETSY link)

  8. What a cool quilt design and the colors just make it pop! I’m a new quilter with only one quilt done, but I’ve been sewing for many years. I say make sure to cut and sew as accurately as possible and it will turn out. And don’t pick a pattern that is too hard so you don’t get overwhelmed.
