Disappearing Hourglass Medallion in Baby Bloomers

Island Batik Partnered with Accuquilt this year to support their campaign “Covering the World.” Our challenge was to make a quilt, donate it to charity, and share it on Instagram using the hashtag #quilttheworld2023. If you would like to participate, you can find more information at this link. You have until December 31, 2023 but giveaways are monthly!

For the Accuquilt – Cover the World initiative, I made a baby quilt for Hope Hollow out of Columbus, Ohio. I looked through several directories and was touched by the personal stories of the owners Jane and Clark. Jane is a two-time cancer survivor! Hope Hollow is how she “lives in gratitude” as she and her husband help Cancer patients in need. Their mission statement is:

“To offer welcome, hospitality and hope by providing lodging, meals, transportation assistance and emotional support …at no cost… to cancer patients and their loved ones, who are financially in need, while receiving cancer treatment in Columbus, Ohio.”

The Hope Hollow website has The Starfish Story which is worth a read and will encourage us all that all our gestures of kindness are worth the effort, even if we can’t fulfill all the needs we see. All that matters is that we make a difference.

Here is the material list for this fun quilt!

  • Island Batik – Baby Bloomers 10-inch precuts
  • Disappearing Hourglass Medallion from Missouri Star Quilting Company
  • Batting – Hobbs Tuscany Wool Batting
  • Piecing Thread – Aurifil Mako 50wt in 2809

Finally to leave you with tips on donating quilts,

  1. Make sure the organization is accepting donations. I’ve run into several who can only accept monetary help at that time.
  2. Feel free to ask how they would use the quilt. Some organizations take in quilts to auction or raffle for their fundraisers. Some are explicit on that purpose, and some will set a quilt aside when they see it because they believe it will do well in their event. I’m happy to support those initiatives–but in this case, I wanted the quilt to go to a person in need, and the owners of Hope Hollow assured me it would.
  3. List the materials and if animals are in your home with the delivery of your quilt. It may matter, especially if the person is already in compromised health.

Donating a quilt is a wonderful gift to pass along. Thanks, Island Batik and Accuquilt for the campaign, and for causing the chain reaction of positive actions throughout the world!

Beautiful taken by Hope Hollow when the quilt arrived! I had put it in the mail before I got a flat photo for myself!
