Vampire Geese? Island Batik Ambassador challenge

Flying Geese is a versatile quilt block that anyone can enjoy from dimensional quilters to whimsy arrow makers. All the ambassadors seem to have a great deal of fun this month utilizing these designs for the Island Batik Fly Away Challenge!

I went a spooky route with the Black Foundations Fabric and Opulent Orange strip set. With these gradients already collected for me, It didn’t take long for the inspiration to set in…. BATS!

Other supplies include

  • Hobbs 80/20 Premium Batting (I would have loved to used their black batting for this project, but I’ve used it all up!)
  • Schmetz 70/11 needle
  • Glide Thread in “Bear” for quilting
  • Aurifil Thread in 5009 for piecing
  • Silly Moon Quilting Co. Beanie Ruler in size 5 for web quilting
  • Babylock Crescendo for piecing and binding
  • Handi Quilter Capri for Quilting

Having a bat block set into 4 strips made for an eerie easy design!

A little fun with negative space to make the spider webs quilted in along with bordering strips to mimic Candy Corn, and this runner is all set!

The runner had the same black fabric for backing, a black binding for finishing.

This strip set has so many spooky possibilities! And if your like me and want yours ready to roll out at the first dip in temperature, you can start today!

Don’t miss out on the other amazing works in this challenge from the other ambassadors!

  2. Hi, Brittany. I’m working with your Lighthouse Windows pattern in Creative Two-Block Quilts book and I’m struggling with making the flying geese work in the second block. Your instruction don’t provide square up measurements and the geese are too large for the other pieces. Will you advise me on how to square these up, please? Thank you.

    1. Hi Maria, Yes, I understand the frustration that the piece of information was edited out! The flying geese unit is 5 1/2 by 3 inches to fit in the block. Thank you, and I hope you love your quilt!
