Island Batik Ambassador Challenge – Tool Craze

Quilt tools are a fabulous resource for perfecting our craft. This month, the Island Batik ambassadors were each given a tool from Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 and, of course, some stunning fabrics to play with!

My combination was the Island Batik “Let it Snow” Winter ’22 Collection, paired with the Four Patch Square Up

Running through some ideas I ultimately decided I wanted to work with lots of sizes. My strategy was to result in 12-inch finished blocks.

With the flexibility of being able to use this tool, I didn’t have to plan out my cuts, or even be that diligent about cutting straight! It would all square up perfectly. Another feature I loved is when I was just short on a size, the Four Patch Square Up Tool made it easy to simply move down to the next size four patch.

There were 4 layouts I ended up enjoying using 2, 3, 4, and 6 inch finished blocks.

I pieced the backing with some added half yard Island Batik Foundations Blenders provided from Island batik. With a dark back, I was happy to use Hobbs Batting 80/20 black batting. I adore this dark batting and use it every chance I get for the main benefit that I can see the spray baste as I apply it. No more globs or sparse valleys as the layers are sandwiched together. The Schmetz Needles 70/10 needle served me well as a universal needle by piecing through the four patch intersections with no missed stitches. Aurifil Thread has every color I could possibly dream of, and the passionate flower collection paired with this fabric perfectly, while also being the industry gold stand for their 50 wt’s no-drama piecing. This quilt is ready for anything now!

The name “Four Patch Flurries” has stuck! It’s a fun use of any size pieces you have, but using the Let It Snow fabric line reminds me of snow fluttering past a window on cozy stormy nights.

Get this fabric at your local quilt shop to have your winter quilt ready to snuggle under this season! This fabric ships SOON!

It wasnt until I was in high school that we moved to IL and our first winter was a snow blizzard.
