We’re getting curvy! Island Batik Drunkards Path Challenge

Is curve piecing a daunting part of the quilting world for you? Then have no fear, there are 22 Island Batik Ambassadors taking on the Drunkards Path Block this month!

We were able to pick any fabrics we wanted with this challenge, so I dove into the Splish Splash collection by Island Batik (Lumin Fabrics) that I received as a 10-inch stack precut. I adore aquatic theme fabrics. The little seahorses through all the pink, green, and blue colorways were fun to play with along with all the bubbles!

I tried a few methods in curve piecing and settled on only pinning the start of the curve, sewing at the slowest setting of my Babylock Crescendo, and pinning the end of the curve.

My first blocks were too small. I discovered this was due to my ironing technique. I was leaving too much folded at the curve, so the Oliso Mini Pro came in handy to make sure I was ironing those curve seams flat.

Size 80/20 was the needle I chose for the curve piecing. I’d recommend an extra sharp if you used glue methods.

Hobbs Thermore Batting was my choice for a thinner batting that matched up with this beach style, summer quilt.

With all the soft pastels with pop of bold prints, Aurifil Dove Gray thread in the Mako 50wt was a great balanced choice.

Finished Quilt is 52×68 inches

I chose a layout the would ripple like waves to make the sea theme. This is my first on point quilt, which was much easier to sew with a bunch of pins keeping the diagonal rows organized. With a little extra space, I added some accuquilt sea medley appliqué to the corners. You can watch the process of applying these in my YouTube video.
