Welcome to opening week of the Island Batik Ambassador Blog Hop Featuring Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Designs!

The ambassadors are making table runners in newly released fabrics, hitting quilt shops near you!
Table runners are a great size project to try new methods and blocks. The Quilter’s Magic Wand and the Deb Tucker’s Tucker Trimmer I (DT03) were sent to me along with all the supporting materials from the program sponsors. Huge thank you to Oliso, Schmetz Needles, Aurifil Thread, and Hobbs Batting!
The fabric I got to play with is Earthly Stories by Jean Wells of The Stitchin’ Post.

When Brainstorming with the fabric and ruler, I looked to the Island Batik Catalog for inspiration on how to make these fabrics shine. They each have an intricate pattern that I was getting stumped on how to show each one, while letting them compliment each other. When I saw “Blue Onion” by Saginaw St. Quilt Co, it was clear that I needed to just let these fabrics mingle together for a captivating design!

I let Electric quilter help me out in the layout. I tried several layouts with sashing, but ultimately enjoyed all the blocks together and rotated dynamically.

Now it’s time to get to work! The squares are a straight forward cut. Not instead of using a quilting ruler or tape to make my Half Square Triangle lines, I can use the Quilter’s Wand. This is definitely a huge time and energy saver. I also love that it’s bright orange and I can easily find it at any moment!

Getting to work with the ruler, I knew I wanted to maximize my enjoyment of it by picking 2 blocks in different sizes. I make the larger quarter square triangle (hourglass) block the tool could make, and a smaller half square triangle that works with 5-inch precuts. A cool feature of this tool is that you can sew two pieces of any fabric together, iron them flat, and get a half square triangle out of them! I might have had to do that on one particular block I sewed off the line!

From Aurifil I was sent colors 4093, 1231, and 2605. I used the light green, 1231 Mako 50wt, for all my piecing.

And then a few more supplies to wrap up this project. How cute is this Oliso M3 Iron in Pistachio matching the earthy fabrics?? I use a Shmetz Needle in size 90/14 for my piecing. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 Cotton batting has been my choice since there are ivory background fabrics in my project.

And here is my finished table runner!

Looking for Earthly Stories? It just shipped to quilt shops!
