Welcome to week 3! Looks like you have your fabrics picked, cut, and ready to sew! Need to head back to the beginning to grab the pattern and some tools? Feel free to revisit the Announcement post.

This pattern involves long seams. The most common problem quilters run into is creating a long curved seam, which started to make their block into a rainbow. It’s even more difficult when people are sewing entire width of fabrics, but there are some simple tips to keep you sewing straight.
First is to give yourself some pins to keep the fabrics aligned. The lower feed dog (gripper) on your sewing machine will pull the fabric on the bottom slightly more than the fabric on top can keep up with. Over a longer distance, this difference adds up to where you’ll notice the bottom fabric running out before the top, and then as you join the strips, the block will curve out.
Second, you want to alternate directions you are sewing your strips. I like to use a wonder clip or pin to assign “top left” on my block, then sew on the strips with the pin alternating. This levels out any shifting to keep your block neutral.
Some shifting and curving is fine because the Fat Eighth Flip block is very forgiving. You will have lots of space to trim. However, there is no space for recuts!
If you sew on block with a 7 inch cut, your best bet is to cut the rest of the strips at 7-inches or find replacement fabric. Measure twice, cut once.

Cutting beyond you ruler can be intimidating, so feel free to rewatch the free tutorial that is in companion to the pattern.
I can’t wait to see you block creations and I’ll see you in week 4 where we are putting the blocks together!
Don’t forget to share your work and see the inspiration from other quilters!
