Creating for a Cause! Corner Beam Quilt with Deb Tucker Studio 180 Design

A large drive for quilters is bringing beauty and comfort for those we love, and compassion we feel for those in unfortunate circumstances. Island Batik has partnered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace. They have the bold tagline “NO ONE SLEEPS ON THE FLOOR IN OUT TOWN!”

“All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. Across the US, too many boys and girls go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and health. That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in. A group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need.”

The Island Batik Ambassadors are making quilts for this program, with a tool that each was sent from Deb Tucker Studio 180 Design. My tool is the Corner Beam!

I decided to use the rest of the fabric from the Log Cabin Challenge, “Local Motion” by Kathy Engle for Mary Mack Made Mine.

Mockup designed in Electric Quilter 8.
Test Block Done! I used the 4-inch finished Corner Beam size units to create this design, with a 8-inch finished square in the center.

This project was easy to tackle with the free tutorial provided one YouTube. She also shows how to make a bonus block from your scraps!

Project list:

  • Fabric
    • Main: Island Batik “Local Motion” by Kathy Engle for Mary Mack Made Mine.
    • Accent: Island Batik Foundation Collection – Black
  • Needle
  • Batting
    • Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 Cotton Batting in size Queen from Hobbs Batting.
  • Thread
  • Other Tools
    • Oliso Pro TG1600 Smart Iron – How else was I going to get those 96 blocks so flat! The auto lift was a life saver on my shoulders as I sat at my kitchen island, and ironed all the blocks through each step.
    • Deb Tucker Studio 180 Corner Beam – used to quickly and accurately trim down perfect corner beam units, giving the effect of a ray of light coming from a corner. Achieve perfectly sewn units every time with high precision. 11 unit size options from 1″ to 6″ in .5″ increments. For right and left handed use.

This final quilt turns out 61 x 75 when using 6 1/2 inch borders.

Make sure to check out the other Island Batik Ambassadors to see wonderful creations with their Deb Tucker Studio 180 tools! There are many amazing shapes that come to life with accuracy!
