Last month I made Turkey Tom for the Funky Friends Challenge with Island Batik. The fabrics that were sent to me were from the collection “Fall Gatherings” A signature Collection by Kathy Engle for Sarah Fabian of Quilt Basket. It’s a beautiful assortment of earthy tones, with stamps of leaves, pinecones, pumpkins, and trees.
Thanksgiving is the natural progression since I’m already wrapped up in Turkeys and Fall Fabrics!
Moving the the next level from last year’s log cabin, I picked out a braided flying geese block. There is a companion pattern with the Braided Flying Geese papers I picked out in the Chatsworth Block of the Month Book from Doug Leko.
By buying one packaging of papers, I had exactly half of what I needed to make the 64″ x 84″ quilt, so I was able to truly test the difference the papers made.
The accuracy was unmatched between paper and regular piecing this block. I could not get the second leg of the braided flying geese block to be at the correct angle, and all of those blocks are not coming to sharp points on the right side of the triangle.
The paper pieced blocks themselves were perfect, but I still managed to get some points in my seam allowance and my sewing veered around. You can have a perfect block all day, but if you’re not sewing straight, you’ll still have those little issues!

- Oliso Pro TG1600 Smart Iron – How else was I going to get those 96 blocks so flat! The auto lift was a life saver on my shoulders as I sat at my kitchen island, and ironed all the blocks through each step.
I tackled some of my pieced backing fears. It took an entire week to plan this out!
Braided Flying Geese Pattern Corrections. There are two issues with the pattern to look out for if you choose to make this quilt from the Chatsworth book. First, the cutting instructions are double what you need for the main print. This is a lot of extra pieces at a nonstandard size to have. I’m brainstorming an extra quilt to use these up. Second, the quilt layout doesn’t match the block counts. There are three three quilt blocks to build with counts of 12, 6, and 6, but to match the diagram, you need 12, 8, and 4 of the block types. I decided to not match the diagram and use what I sewed. I think the twist and turns of the blocks still have the effect that is desired. No one will notice, but it’s worth the warning before you also are turn blocks over and under for an hour trying to figure out what isn’t matching.
The pattern issues do not decline my feelings for it, because this is honestly my favorite quilt I’ve ever made. The color contrast is striking. The little bits of autumn pattern peak through the goose shapes, and the strong angles let you experience all the movement that’s in the fabric pattern. I Already have it on my bed, which thanks to the breathable cotton batting makes it a good weight for a summer quilt.
