Twilight Dragonfly! Island Batik Applique Challenge

There are hundreds of ways to applique. In August, I showed needle turn fabric with a straight stitch attachment on the Acorn Soup quilt. I prefer machine finished appliques when it comes to batik fabrics, so what better way to explore applique than the Adventurous Applique Blog Hop with Island Batik!

Being in the Island Batik ambassador program means I am sent all the fabric and supporting materials for these project prompts. Thank you to sponsors in addition to Island Batik: Oliso Home, Hobbs Batting, Aurifil Thread, Schmetz Needles, and Hab and Dash.

As an affiliate for Fat Quarter Shop and Amazon, I may receive a small commission when you shop with my links.

In this challenge, we’re using a technique from the Full Bloom Block of the Month by 4th and 6th Designs, that uses Edge Coloring, also known as Edge Painted Applique. You can watch a demo of it from Shabby Fabrics Youtube.

I was sent the Twilight Collection by Kathy Engle for Claudia Porter, a beautiful arrangements of blues and yellows in daisy prints.

After sitting with this collection for a while, I leaned towards dragonflies in the night sky. I cut the fabrics into 10 1/2-inch by 12 1/2 squares and used the critters die from Accuquilt to get the dragonflies on the block.

The dragonflies were tacked down with a straight stitch on my domestic machine, then I joined the blocks, added 2 borders, and loaded it on the longarm frame. The inner border was with 3 1/2 inch strips and the outer border 7 1/2 inch.

An all-over double loop, avoiding the dragonflies matched the whimsical free flying motion of this quilt.

I put the binding on the quilt, then went back in for finishing the dragonflies! I have a HandiQuilter Capri, a sit-down machine, so I’m able to go back into quilts easily and add more details. This is where I just sat back, relaxed, and thread painted the edges of each dragonfly with the Aurifil 40wt (green spool) thread.

As a little bonus, the neutral thread I used in the bobbin made these beautiful dragonfly outlines on the back!

And the best part is that when I was done with the final dragonfly, the quilt was already done since the binding was finished. It was a great, satisfying finish to be able to hang it right up to display.

  8. […] Adventurous Appliqué Blog Hop was a challenge to try thread painting on appliqué. I made this dragonfly quilt with the Twilight Collection. I’ve put this quilt on our sun porch and it’s been an extra source of sunniness as we relax and enjoy rainy afternoons. […]
