Fat Eighth Flip Quilt Along – Week 1 -Fabric Hunt!

Welcome to week 1! I’m so glad you’re here! Looks like you’re interested in a fun, beginner friendly quilt! If you haven’t gone through the Announcement Post already, you’ll want to head there for the pattern and schedule. Today we’re talking about fabric options!

A Fat Eighth is a piece of fabric that is one eighth of a yard. This typically comes out to 9 inches wide, and 21 inches long.

The Throw size calls for 32 fat eighths. There’s lots of bundle options in various fabric collections. If you purchase one, make sure you have enough in the bundle to cover the 32, or have coordinating fabric on hand to add in.

Big prints work great with this pattern! I’m using Birdsong by Gingiber for Moda Fabrics.

Question 1: Can I use fat quarters?

Yes! You can use 16 fat quarters since a fat eighth is half of a fat quarter. From each fat quarter you get your two 7 1/2-inch strips, along with a 2 1/2-inch strip for scrappy binding.

Question 2: Can I use yardage?

Absolutely! 32 fat eighths is equivalent to 4 yards of fabric. Since each fat eighth has some scrap, you can actually use less. you can make 8 cuts of 7 1/2 inch strips with 1 2/3 yards of fabric for each fabric for a 2-color quilt. Pressing to the darker fabric instead of all one direction will work better for nesting seams.

If you have 4 individual yards in your stash, you can achieve a beautiful quilt! You’ll need Four 7 1/2-inch strips from each of the 4 yards. When assembling the strips, there’s more color balance in using Dark-Dark-Light-Light rather than Dark-Light-Dark-Light.

Question 3: Can I just use scraps?

Of course! You’ll need some bigger scraps though, sixty-four 7 1/2-inch squares and thirty-two 3 1/2-inch by 7 1/2-inch rectangles.

Question 4: Can I use a layer cake (10-inch precuts)?

This pattern isn’t 10-inch precut friendly.

Question 5: Can I use some Jelly Roll (2 1/2-inch) strip sets?

Just for the binding. The quilt block unit is too large.
