Fat Eighth Flip Quilt-Along Announcement!

Need a quick last minute quilt for a graduate? Want to use a bundle of fabric you’ve been saving? Then this Quilt-Along featuring the free pattern, Fat Eighth Flip and free tutorial from Fat Quarter shop is perfect for you! This is a fun, beginner friendly pattern great for all quilters!

Quilt alongs are a fun way to connect with other quilters while working toward a common goal with common challenges. We learn a deal from advanced quilters while any level of quilter gives inspiration on color choices. motivation, and personal testimony to the task. While I’ve quilted nearly 20 years, it was the online quilt alongs that sparked joy of the craft to a whole new level. I hope you find that joy as well!

Some quilters are super speedy, finishing a quilt top over the weekend. This is an easy one that you can definitely tackle in that timeframe, but the schedule is paced to take on one large step per week for the duration of 4 weeks, and 2 weeks to catch up in the end. The schedule is here:

The announcement is May 15th, with the Quilt along officially beginning Saturday, June 1st.

  • June 2 – June 8: Fabric Hunt! The blog post will give you some ideas on coloring, alternate fabric pre-cuts like fat quarters and yardage, and some deals!
  • June 9 – June 15: Cutting. Blog post will go through your initial cuts, and some tips to keep those big cuts straight!
  • June 16 – June 22: Blocks. Time to get stitching!

Ok! It’s time to get started! While hunting for the fabric you love, is there anything else you may be missing or needing to upgrade?

  • Download the free pattern: Fat Eighth Flip. There are multiple sizes available. This quilt-along focus’s on the throw size, but feel free to make the one that’s right for you!
    • Throw – 56.5″ x 68.5″
      Queen – 84.5″ x 85.5″
      King – 102.5 x 112.5
  • Start looking at Fat Eighth Bundles! For the Throw Size you need 32 Fat Eighths, so keep the bundle size in mind while you browse. Yes, you can use 16 Fat quarters or yardage, which will be covered June 1st.
Sneak Peak! I’m using Birdsong by Gingiber for Moda Fabrics!
  • Cutting Mat. 24×36 inch cutting mat – This is immensely helpful to make large, accurate cuts. And this Lori Holt version a stunning compared to the gray ones I cut on for years. They last a long time, so invest in the one you adore!

Cutting Ruler. 8.5×24-inch cutting ruler – This is my most used and recommended size. It does a folded Width of Fabric end to end, while being wide enough to secure the fabric from shifting underneath it. I used smaller rulers for years, carefully folding fabric on itself to cut, or shifting my ruler through the width. It can be done, but if this ruler broke, I’d buy it again in a heartbeat!

Iron. I used an iron for several months without knowing some of the heating elements were broken. I guess I thought my finger types were just getting more heat resistant with time, but when I got an Oliso Iron, my fingertips were absolutely humbled by how hot that fabric was after I pressed it! Once you get spoiled by the auto-lift, it’s hard to use anything else!

Sharps. Anything need a refresh? Rotary cutter, fresh rotary blades and needles. I go with a Schmetz universal 75/11 for my piecing sewing.

Batting. Go ahead and browse some batting. An 80/20 blend of polyester and cotton is my go to. Keep in mind the Throw Size of this quilt is 56 1/2 x 68 1/2. Typical Throw size battings will be too small, so you’ll want to look for a twin size.

Ready to go?

The fun starts soon! Feel free to share the “I’m in!” image and start connecting with other quilters!
